What our SEND schools teach
The pathway curriculum
Our SEND schools use the pathway curriculum, providing a broad and balanced education to develop well-rounded individuals who can go forward into their adult lives prepared for the work environment, capable of being independent and productive citizens. The curriculum includes Learning Outside the Classroom activities (Forest School, canoe club, scouts, horse riding, Duke of Edinburgh silver and bronze awards, residential and expeditionary learning) and after school clubs and activities supporting learning and independent living.

Curriculum at individual SEND schools
Our curriculum at Chalk Hill is designed to help all our students to re-engage in learning, filling gaps, offering challenges and ultimately giving our students the breadth and depth of knowledge they need to succeed in their academic careers and beyond.
Our teachers teach subjects that they specialise in and those they are passionate about, passing that passion and experience onto our students.
We want all our students to leave Chalk Hill ready, academically and emotionally, for their next steps in school and society. We pair academic success and achievement with social progress and emotional intelligence to create resilient future citizens.

Curriculum Intent
The curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 & 4 is broad and balanced. Due to the nature of the backgrounds our students come from we place great importance on Personal Development (PD) lessons, there are more of these than would be found in mainstream. This character curriculum underpins the work that we do at Sunrise; supporting our pupils to become well rounded individuals who make a positive difference in their communities. In academic terms, great importance is placed on reading; we have a discrete reading lesson in addition to English lessons and all student facing staff have received training in phonics.
Our primary curriculum is aligned with the secondary curriculum to create an all through learning journey for our students. English and Maths are delivered discretely, reading is an everyday activity and other subjects are delivered through Humanities and Topic. Learning is of a practical nature where pupils can discuss subjects and take part in active learning to engage them before their learning is captured through a range of mediums including written work, photographs, pictures and projects.
Our secondary curriculum remains broad and balanced; to cater for the needs of our pupils we place a greater weighting on Physical Education in year 7 and all pupils have vertical classes in vocational areas through Occupational Studies one afternoon a week. English is at the heart of our curriculum offer and we supplement this with an additional reading lesson too. Pupils begin their entry level certificate in Maths at the start of year eight and progress on at the individual speed needed for each learner to GCSE Maths. Pupils also study Science, Art, Technology, Physical Education, IT and Occupational Studies (vocational learning). Options at KS4 are tailored to the needs of the pupils in the cohort coming through and have included Art, Food Technology, Construction, IT and Sport. Pupils leave us with a range of accreditations including AQA unit awards, first aid certificates and food hygiene certificates and qualifications ranging from entry level to GCSE. We aspire to challenge our pupils to become the best academic version of themselves that they can; constantly encouraging them to improve their learning and attainment.
Both primary and secondary pupils have access to Outdoor Learning over the course of the year. This involves engaging with the great outdoors in a variety of ways, from gardening and horticulture to bird watching to forest school activities to visiting a care farm and involves learning linked to the outdoors but also with links to core subjects and the character curriculum.
At both primary and secondary level we have Individual Learning Plans which are linked closely to EHCPs. The ILPs are recorded and tracked on revision map and we have regular half termly conversations with parents and carers. ILP targets are updated each half term and put into exercise books in a pupil friendly format. These can be annotated to help pupils see and understand the progress they are making. We have two data drops for each year group over the course of the year using IDEAS, our assessment tool. We are also trialing a new EEGT SEND schools assessment tool in English Maths and Science and will be bringing other subjects on board with this over the coming months. At primary level phonics screening is completed half termly.
