Bury games designer says getting a BAFTA nomination was ‘a dream come true’

A teenager from Bury St Edmunds narrowly missed out on winning a BAFTA.

Ruby, 18, studies on a games design course at West Suffolk College.

She was nominated in the BAFTA Young Games Designers 15- to 18-year-old game making category.

Nine people were up for this top gong and Ruby was hoping for success after making a game called Through The Darkness’.

The concept behind her creation was to give people an opportunity to experience what it is like to play a game if you are blind. Players must follow the sound of music to enable them to complete a maze.

This was the 15th anniversary of this competition and the online awards ceremony was hosted by the actor and comedian, Inel Tomlinson earlier this month.

Ruby said: “I came up with the idea when I played a game with my eyes closed. I was really happy to be nominated and so were my family. It was a dream come true. Whilst I’m disappointed not to win, it was brilliant to be part of this and having a BAFTA nomination is something that can never be taken away from me. This is my passion and it’s a career that I want to go in to.”

Ruby’s tutor – Chris Thompson – was super chuffed. He said: “As far as we are aware, we are the only college in the country that runs an accessibility programme as part of our course. And this inspired Ruby (in terms of making her game). Ruby is the hardest working student. When she came to us, she had never made a game before. And now she is one of the top students in the country. We could not be more proud of her success.”
