A woman from Mildenhall completed her first ever marathon in London for a charity that is dear to her heart.
20-year-old Ruby Nugent, who works for Eastern Education Group, completed the 26-mile run in a time of five hours, 16 minutes and 51 seconds.
She described the feeling as ‘brilliant’ and managed to run the whole way, raising over £4000.00 for St Nicholas Hospice – an organisation who has supported Ruby’s family and friends.
She said: “I smiled, laughed and cheered the whole way round – even when it got tough. I managed to spot all my friends and family – and they all kept me going to the end. Highlights included carnival floats with DJs, dancing to the macarena and getting to spot my friends and family – and seeing my best friend surprised me with my family at mile nine.
“I had no idea she was going to be there, and it made my race. I also had my friends and family send me voice notes every kilometre which kept me going.”
Ruby said that the crowds were uplifting and really helped to take her mind off the running.
But what did it feel like to cross the finish line?
“It was an overwhelming feeling, I was definitely proud, but also very relieved it was finished. The last few miles were tough. The lady who gave me my medal, gave me a hug and congratulated me which was emotional and made me realise what I had achieved.”
After the marathon Ruby headed back to Mildenhall but did have the energy to stop off for some fast food, before heading home for a bath an early night. To contribute to Ruby’s fundraising for St Nicholas Hospice you can do so via this link: St Nicholas Hospice Suffolk: Ruby’s Donation page
