Rocco Goduti, 17, from Debenham, achieved an A* in History and A grades in Economics and Mathematics at Abbeygate Sixth Form College (ASFC). He will now go on to study at the University of Nottingham.
Rocco’s results are a testament to his hard work and resilience. Diagnosed with dyslexia in Year 10 after earlier childhood epilepsy, his grades improved significantly following his diagnosis as he began to receive the additional support he needed.
His mum, Clare, was overcome with emotion on results day. “Rocco’s had a tough time,” she said. “He was diagnosed with dyslexia in Year 10, and his average grade picked up after that because he was starting to get extra time. He has worked so hard and I am so proud of him.”
For Rocco, Abbeygate played a key role in building his confidence. Coming from a small secondary school in Debenham, the step up to a larger college environment was significant. “Everyone has been really helpful,” he said. “Every time I’ve needed anything, the teachers and support staff have always been there.”
Clare echoed that sentiment. “It has been absolutely superb. Coming from a very small high school to somewhere much bigger, I think it gave Rocco so much more confidence. For his development, he really needed to gain that independence.”
A highlight of his time at Abbeygate was a history trip to Berlin. “I really enjoyed that – it was a lot of fun,” he said. The college’s ethos of independence also resonated with him. “It’s a college, so you have to push yourself. I think that will be similar to university.”
Looking ahead, Rocco is excited for the next stage of his life – and he will have a familiar face waiting for him, as his cousin is already studying at Nottingham. Clare admitted the transition will not be without its challenges. “We are really looking forward to his next chapter, but I am going to find it tough not having him around.”
To anyone considering Abbeygate, Rocco’s advice was simple. “Go ahead – it is absolutely amazing. It is a great step, especially for independence.”
