Students from Duke of Lancaster recently set off on a school-first, once‑in‑a‑lifetime journey to New York City

Ten students from Duke of Lancaster recently set off on a school-first, once‑in‑a‑lifetime journey to New York City through social enterprise organisation, Challenges Abroad as part of the schools ongoing commitment to an inclusive and holistic educational offering.

During the visit, which was the school’s first ever overseas trip, students were offered an inspiring opportunity to visit the Big Apple while practising important life skills such as navigating airports, managing crowded spaces and handling changes to routine.

The group visited some of New York’s most iconic landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Ellis Island. Cultural experiences included attending Aladdin on Broadway, exploring the American Museum of Natural History, and taking part in a guided visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Year 9 student, Oscar said: “I want to relive this day again and again.” Peer, Damon, also in Year 9, commented: “New York is my happy place.”

Assistant Headteacher and School Lead for the trip, Vicky Yarham, said: “It was wonderful to see our students rise to the challenge of an adventure on the other side of the world. From flying on an aeroplane to trying unfamiliar foods and exploring a new country without their families, they all rose to every challenge with resilience, enthusiasm and determination. We are so proud of them!”

Elizabeth Barneveld, Head of School at Duke of Lancaster, said: “At Duke of Lancaster, we place a strong emphasis on enrichment experiences, and I am so pleased that we have been able to broaden horizons and support our students’ independence and confidence. For some students, this will be their first time on a plane, their first time travelling abroad, and a chance to experience the world in a way that may have otherwise felt out of reach. That is something we do not take lightly, and something we are immensely proud to be making possible.”
