A Chatteris manufacturer opened its doors to the public as part celebrations to mark National Manufacturing Day today.
Stainless Metalcraft manufactures specialist components for a range of performance-critical sectors including nuclear, energy, data centres, Big Science, medical, submersible and marine applications.
Its team welcomed students from Sir Harry Smith Community College for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into life in engineering during the afternoon, finishing with a tour of the on-site North Cambs Training Centre where its apprentices are now trained. Members of the public were also able to ‘look under the bonnet’ of this long-standing Chatteris business, with a special Open Evening that included machinery demonstrations and opportunities to chat with apprentices, current and former employees.
Chris Duggan, managing director at Metalcraft, said: “Engineering offers a variety of rewarding career pathways but is often misconceived by the wider community.
“MAKE UK’s National Manufacturing Day aims to demystify the industry, giving local communities an opportunity to see modern manufacturing in action and explore the wide range of careers available.
“As a key part of the local manufacturing landscape for over 150 years, the nature of our work has changed significantly over that time, so it was great to welcome members of the public to see behind the scenes and find out more what we do today and careers in manufacturing.”
National Manufacturing Day is an annual, nationwide event organised by MAKE UK – the voice of UK manufacturers. It aims to shine a spotlight on the industry and give local communities a chance to explore the wide range of career opportunities – from school leavers to experienced hires and those looking to re-skill.
Alongside factory tours, Metalcraft and its training provider NCTC, provided information on school routes and further education requirements for careers in the manufacturing industry.

“As well as welcoming students to find out more about the industry, we also hosted an event to showcase and promote the many pathways and career opportunities that exist in manufacturing, shining a light on what is a fantastic industry.”
