Work Experience

Work experience is an important part of preparing students for their future careers. It provides real-world insight into different industries, helping students make informed decisions about their next steps.

Why work experience matters

Work experience helps students develop essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. It also builds confidence and gives valuable insight into workplace expectations.

Benefits for students

Students gain hands-on experience, improve their CVs, and develop a clearer understanding of career pathways. Work experience also supports personal growth, independence, and confidence in professional settings. In addition, it gives students the opportunity to build valuable connections with employers and industry professionals, which can lead to future opportunities, references, and a stronger understanding of the working world.

How to find a placement

Students can find placements by contacting local employers, using college-recommended opportunities, speaking to tutors, or accessing online platforms such as Grofar. Early preparation and proactive communication are key. All students can also be supported by the Work Placement team, who can offer guidance with searching for opportunities, making applications, preparing for placements, and overcoming any barriers that may affect access. There is also more information in the student work placement packs below.

Safeguarding and support

The college ensures all placements meet health and safety standards. Students are supported by the Work Experience team throughout their placement, with clear reporting processes in place should any concerns arise.

Tips for parents

Encourage your young person to be proactive, punctual, and professional throughout the work experience process. Parents can support by helping them prepare for interviews or introductions, plan travel, organise suitable clothing, and understand what will be expected of them in a workplace. It is also helpful to talk positively about the experience, encourage good communication, and discuss how each day has gone so they can reflect on what they are learning, build confidence, and make the most of the opportunity.

Employer expectations

Employers expect students to be reliable, motivated, and respectful throughout their placement. This includes arriving on time, dressing appropriately, listening carefully to instructions, and showing a positive attitude towards tasks and feedback. Students are not expected to know everything straight away, but they are expected to be willing to learn, ask questions when unsure, and take the opportunity seriously. Good attendance, professionalism, and enthusiasm can help students make a strong impression and gain the most from their placement experience.
