In this conversation, Malcolm Gaskill explores how people have used the supernatural to make sense of the world, from miracles and alchemy to witch hunts, spirits and encounters with the dead. Through a series of vivid and interconnected stories, the lecture opens a fresh perspective on our haunted past, asking not only what people believed, but what they felt. From uncanny encounters and vampire graves to the battlefields of the First World War, this event searches hearts as well as minds to uncover the forgotten realities of earlier lives.

Bio:

Malcolm Gaskill is Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of seven books, including Witchfinders, Hellish Nell, and the Sunday Times bestseller The Ruin of All Witches. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, writes regularly for the London Review of Books and lives with his family in Cambridge.
