Barbara Beaton – 100 Voices

Barbara began her journey with West Suffolk as a part-time assessor in the teacher education team. She supported teachers and trainers in achieving the necessary qualifications to conduct assessments in accordance with awarding body guidelines. She then transitioned her role into focusing on teacher training and management with adult education. This then led her to become permanent staff where she was appointed Staff Development Manager, Head of Department and ultimately, Head of Faculty for Higher Education and Professional Development. After dedicating over two decades to working for the college, Barbara retired in 2014.

What influenced your decision to apply to West Suffolk College?

I discovered that having the opportunity to work part time, especially in a way that allowed me to balance my professional life with family, was incredibly beneficial. At the time, I really wanted to be present with my loved ones, but I also felt a strong desire to find a meaningful purpose in working in education.

Did you form any connections during your time at West Suffolk College?

During my time at the college, I made long-lasting friendships that I will cherish for years to come.

Are there any particular memories with us that stand out to you?

I was proud to be part of the team that helped the college achieve an Outstanding inspection grade across the board, as well as the Investors in People Award. I also contributed to writing the Management Charter that underpinned our core values – RSVP and P. One of the highlights of my time was working collaboratively to help establish the University for Suffolk. I introduced the ‘Preparing for Management’ training programme for staff, supported by an external trainer and mentor, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see so many colleagues go on to take up leadership roles both within and beyond the group.

What would your advice be to future students and staff of Eastern Education Group?

Enjoy your time, grasp the opportunities offered, and make friends for life.
