A hairdresser from Newmarket proved she can cut it after being named lecturer of the year at a prestigious ceremony.
Karen Baldwin, 48 received this accolade at the 2026 Concept Hair Magazine Recognition Awards held at Brooksby Hall in Leicestershire.
The annual occasion honours excellence in hairdressing and barbering within education.
Karen was judged by a panel of industry leaders who evaluated nominations from across the UK for a variety of categories, including Team of the Year, College Unsung Hero, and Employer Engagement.
Karen was nominated for Lecturer of the Year by her colleagues and students based at West Suffolk College. She said: “Knowing that people took the time to share their experiences of working with me made this recognition even more meaningful than the award itself.”
On claiming the top prize, she said: “I was completely overwhelmed and in absolute shock. Seeing my commitment, passion, and dedication recognised on a national stage is something I will never forget. It is a moment that every lecturer who genuinely loves what they do hopes to experience.”
The judges commented: “Karen demonstrated outstanding teaching practices, inspired and supported learners, and contribute to the continuous growth and success of her college’s educational programs.”
Reflecting on her journey as an educator, Karen continued: “West Suffolk College has played a huge part. The culture of continuous improvement, through regular lesson observations, constructive feedback and ongoing mentoring, has encouraged me to constantly reflect, develop and strive for excellence in my teaching. I feel incredibly fortunate to work for an organisation that genuinely values both its staff and students and encourages us all to be the very best we can be.” Karen received a trophy and a hamper of hairbrushes from Denman as a result of receiving this accolade.
