We are aware that the recent meningitis outbreak in Kent will have caused concern for many families, and we want to take this opportunity to offer reassurance.
The NHS has confirmed that the overall risk of MenB to people outside the Kent area remains low. Nevertheless, we feel it is important that all families feel informed and prepared in terms of what to look out for. The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our highest priority, and we will continue to liaise with public health authorities and seek advice where necessary.
Symptoms to be aware of
Meningitis symptoms can develop suddenly. If your child develops any of the following, please seek medical advice immediately:
- A high temperature (fever)
- Vomiting
- A severe headache
- A stiff neck
- A dislike of bright lights
- Drowsiness or unresponsiveness
- Seizures (fits)
- A rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it – please note that a rash does not always appear, and you should not wait for one before seeking help
If you are concerned, contact your GP, call 111, or in an emergency call 999 immediately.
For further information, the NHS provides clear guidance on meningitis symptoms and treatment.

The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered to young people in Year 9. If your child missed this vaccination, they may still be eligible to receive it – young people can access this vaccine up until the age of 25.
