Public Services students from West Suffolk College recently took part in a Police Scrutiny Panel, providing them with a unique opportunity to explore policing, accountability and community engagement beyond the classroom.
The event began with students learning about police powers, stop and search, and the rights and responsibilities of members of the public. Armed with this knowledge, students then worked alongside scrutiny panel members and police officers to review real stop and search cases.
Throughout the session, students were encouraged to critically analyse evidence, challenge decision-making processes and ask questions of senior police leaders. They also contributed recommendations and feedback based on the cases presented, helping them develop valuable skills in communication, analysis and civic participation.

A particular highlight of the day was the opportunity to engage directly with the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner and the Area Commander for East Suffolk. These discussions gave students first-hand insight into how policing decisions are made, how accountability is maintained and how communities can help shape local priorities.
Experiences such as these are an important part of the Public Services curriculum, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts and gain a deeper understanding of the services and organisations that support society.
The event also demonstrated the value of youth voice, showing students that their opinions matter and that they can play an active role in influencing issues that affect their communities.

West Suffolk College would like to thank Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality for providing this opportunity, as well as AJ Morgan and the Public Services team for supporting students to participate.
By engaging with professionals, debating real issues and contributing to meaningful discussions, our students continue to demonstrate the confidence, professionalism and critical thinking skills that will support them in their future careers.
