Helena Rudd – 100 Voices

Helena’s journey at West Suffolk College began in 1995, when she was invited to join as a dance consultant during the college’s initial efforts to establish its performing arts provision. Her expertise quickly proved valuable, as she soon became a part of the newly formed department as a dance lecturer.

After completing her first year, the college recognised her talents and offered her a permanent position which eventually led her the following year to lead the performing arts course.

Throughout her time at West Suffolk College, Helena remained a constant presence in the department, witnessing a period of great transformation and growth.

How did your time with us help shape your journey?

Performing arts has gone through several iterations here at the college and I have provided continuity and stability throughout all that time. I am most proud of setting up E0.45 productions with Mila Bogen, a complete change of approach to delivering Performing Arts through productions. This encouraged and inspired the current Principal to redevelop the department into Conservatoire EAST and acknowledge it as one of the flagship departments of the college.

Do you have any stand-out memories from your time with us?

Over the years, I have had the privilege of watching my students achieve many successes in the performing arts industry and it fills me with great pride to know I played a part in their journey. It’s especially heartwarming when former students, even those who left years ago, reach out to share how meaningful their time with us was and express gratitude for the support they received.

Do you have a message you’d like to share as we mark 100 years of our history?

Remember the roots of the college and what it stood for then and should still stand for now – supporting individuals and giving them a chance to be successful.

Do you have any advice or words of encouragement for future students and staff at Eastern Education Group?

Compete with yourself, not others, and strive to be the best you can be, no matter what the task is.
