100 Voices – Paul Harding

Paul Harding was a key figure in the Hospitality department at West Suffolk College, helping to establish the school from 1987. Over nearly 30 years, he dedicated himself to teaching and guiding students of all levels, from those with learning difficulties to degree-level learners. As Course Director, he played a vital role in shaping NVQ and VRQ programs, ensuring students were well-prepared for further study and employment. Paul reflects on his time at WSC with fondness, proud to have been part of the college’s history.

How do you feel about being part of the college’s 100-year history?

I’m just proud to have been a small part of the history of the college and to have made a bit of a difference to the lives of so many young people.

When did you start working at the college, and what did you do there?

I was a lecturer in the Hospitality department at West Suffolk College, helping set up the school there from 1987. I worked there for nearly thirty years and always enjoyed teaching and guiding a wide range of students into employment and further studies. I was a Course Director during my time at WSC for NVQ 1-3, as well as VRQ 1-3. I also taught students with learning difficulties and additionally taught to degree level. Being part of the history of WSC was and is the most satisfying job I have ever had.

What are your favourite memories from working at the college?

Students going on to work in hospitality in a whole range of jobs. Winning and participating in a wide range of competitions. Changing people’s lives, hopefully for the better. The students always came first.

What would your advice be for future staff at Eastern Education Group?

Always put the needs of the students first.
