100 Voices – Carol King

Carol King joined West Suffolk College over two decades ago after following her passion to ‘see young people achieve their dreams’. She began as a Lecturer before becoming a Senior Lecturer, contributing to the college’s “Outstanding” inspection result at the time. Her career progressed to Head of the 14-16 programme, where she enjoyed working closely with young people, before exploring a new opportunity overseas as a Deputy Dean.

With a career dedicated to supporting students, Carol reflects fondly on her time at WSC and the impact she made during her years there.

Where did it all start for you and West Suffolk College?

I started working at West Suffolk College in September 2002, having moved there from twelve years at Lowestoft College. I started as a Lecturer, and then became a Senior Lecturer, assisting in getting us through our fabulous Outstanding inspection, which felt fantastic.

I ran several childcare courses and taught on health and social care on both at level 2 and 3. I was given the opportunity to do my ILM management training, which led to a role as Head of the 14-16 programme. I also carried out most of the schools’ visits, which I really enjoyed.

What were your main highlights while working with us?

West Suffolk College is a fabulous environment if you want to achieve your dreams. I’d say my highlights were all of it, but particularly:

A) being asked to consider a role in Saudi

B) seeing students who’d had a really hard time in secondary education achieving their dreams

C) feeling so proud of the work I’d been involved with for the home educated students.

What would you say to future students and staff at Eastern Education Group?

Grab every opportunity that comes your way.
