Mary Steeden – 100 Voices

Mary joined West Suffolk College in 2000 and worked as a lecturer for 22 years until she retired. She worked with hundreds of students throughout that time, teaching a wide range of courses and levels. She is pleased to see so many go into successful careers. Mary also has many fond memories of the colleagues she worked with and the laughter she enjoyed with them.

What made you join Eastern Education Group?

I was approached to join the College following completion of my undergraduate degree, where I had studied two years of my degree at West Suffolk College then finished off in Cambridge for the final year. I was considering some options for where to go next, and Phil Thirkettle was keen for me to join the College, so I did. As a result, I lectured at West Suffolk College for twenty-two years from 2000.

In that time, I taught across several levels and courses, from level two through to level six, with areas including sociology, sport, health, public services, criminology, behavioural studies, and policing. Over the years, I managed several courses from within these areas.

Do you have any special memories from your time with us?

Back in 2000, the College had a lovely family atmosphere, and it felt very collegiate. I worked with amazing colleagues – for example, Dinky Williamson. She was a great support when I first started lecturing.

We were all based in the big staff room at the top of Gibraltar House (now a computer room). In there, there were wonderful colleagues – Rob King (Head of Faculty), Terry Barnes, Trevor Tinley (a tower of strength), and Rachel Martin, who taught psychology. For many years I worked with Clare Fasey – she was a good colleague to work with. I have fond memories of Brian Lowry and his great pilates for staff training on PD Days, and his famous self-written Friday Poem that was sent to all staff.

In the rest of Gib House, there was also Paul Drury, who I taught alongside on the degree for one year, and the students loved it. Paul was based in the Computer Room on the first floor, with the wonderful Maureen Ridden and Pam Hill. Sadly, Paul Drury and Rob King have passed away. However, I am still in close contact with their wives. Also, there was Christine Connor who was always good company, and Daniel Connor, who I have known since his time at school.

There were also many wonderful moments of learning and engagement with students. A student trip to the battlefields in France was the most memorable trip ever (with Daniel Connor, Jo Wyatt and me). Also, many trips with students to undertake Public Order Training with Suffolk Constabulary. The Public Order Training was a great day out where students were tasked to prepare the police for how to engage a hostile crowd.

Are there any family or friends who have connections to EEG?

I have maintained friendships with many ex-staff from the College. Both my boys went to college as students.

In addition, I still hear from several former students. Sam Day, a former student who was police cadet of the year whilst he was with us. He has done amazingly well in the police. Also, Ian Miller – a wonderful student who I still see and is now coaching football.

What did you go onto to do after College?

I retired in 2022 following a long running illness.

Is there a message you would like to share as we celebrate our 100 years of history?

Congratulations on an outstanding century!

Lastly, do you have any advice for future students and staff at EEG?

Best wishes, and hand your assignments in on time!
