Chris Jaggard – 100 Voices

Chris joined West Suffolk College in 1970 as an engineering student and studied in the brand-new building at the back of (what was then) the main building. He learnt the trade so well; it has shaped his life. As a result, he has never been unemployed and is now retired. He remains thankful for the staff and the department.

What made you join Eastern Education Group?

I commenced my further education at West Suffolk College in 1971 as a full-time engineering student. I attended the new purpose-built building at the rear of the College under the E.I.T.B. course. I was lucky enough to be in the first group to start the EITB course, which was one year full-time, and then three years, one day a week – all sponsored by my employer (Shepard Equipment Ltd).

The training involved all engineering trades, including practice, theory, and finally specialising in subjects dictated by my employer.

The lecturers I can recall who taught us were: Mr Roberts (machining), Mr Dorrington (machining), Mr Mathis (welding), Mr Britain (pattern and development/fabrication), Mr Young (electronics), Mr Sharp (health and safety) and Mr Philips (engineering principals).

The training and instruction I received was second to none and gave me an amazing start on my employment in Engineering, for which I will always be thankful. My training gave me the opportunity to progress from sheet metal pattern and development, welding, jig design, machinery design, engineering management, and finally senior management, running a medium sized engineering manufacturing plant. Then, finally retirement – having never been unemployed.

Do you have any special memories from your time with us?

Assisting in a special project in my first year to manufacture a special bed for the local hospital.

What did you go onto to do after College?

Now retired but still acting as an engineering consultant within the waste and recycling industry.
