Apprentice plumber flushed with success after securing prestigious bursary

An apprentice plumber from Newmarket has made a splash with industry after securing a prestigious bursary.

Alice King, 20, from Newmarket received £1000.00 worth of tools after putting in an application to a scholarship programme run by The Worshipful Company of Plumbers and Monument Tools.

The Munro Building Services Ltd employee sent off applied, explaining why she thought she deserved the tools over others.

Alice was supported in her efforts by Eastern Education Group and West Suffolk College who wrote supporting quotes to back Alice’s bid.

And the level 3 apprentice has just found out that she was one of six people who were chosen from across the UK to receive an impressive haul of new equipment.

Alice picked up her prize at The Built Environment Campus based in Bury St Edmunds and was delighted with the outcome. She said: “I explained in my application that I sometimes find it harder being on site – but if I had my own tools I can do it all myself.

“I was told that my application stood out and this will give me more access to do more things. It’s made it easier to progress – a big thank you The Worshipful Company of Plumbers and Monument Tools.”

Duncan Barnes is a plumbing co-ordinator working for Eastern Education Group and West Suffolk College who support around 300 plumbing students currently. Duncan said: “Alice received a number of tools for building services and engineering to help her with her future career. A massive thank you to Monument Tools and The Worshipful Company of Plumbers.”

Master of The Worshipful Company of Plumbers, Sandra Raine, said: “I was delighted to see Alice receive this bursary, proudly sponsored by Monument Tools and the Plumbers’ Charity.

“The Worshipful Company of Plumbers hopes these tools will support her as she continues to work independently, build her skills, and progress in her plumbing career. “Alice’s achievement is a powerful testament to her hard work, passion and potential. As we have just celebrated International Women’s Day, her success is a timely reminder that plumbing is a rewarding and accessible career choice for women as well as men.

“We warmly congratulate Alice and wish her every success in the years ahead. We can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Today is World Plumbing Day. Set up by the World Plumbing Council in 2010, the day recognises how plumbing creates a global network of skilled professionals, pipes, and standards that connect people everywhere to health, opportunity, and each other.
