A Suffolk educator has proven to be a cut above the rest after named a finalist in a national competition.
Jo Doward, 59, from Stowmarket is a teacher at West Suffolk College. She has worked in education for over 30 years and is in with a chance of being named ‘Educator of the Year’ in the British Hairdressing Business Awards 2026.
Her work has been recognised thanks to the support she has given to thousands of students over three decades.
In addition to this, she has helped scores of learners reach regional and national competitions in events such as World Skills, Hair Con and Salon International.
The British Hairdressing Business Awards celebrate businesses and individuals who combine creativity with smart, sustainable business practices, and who demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence and raising standards across the UK hairdressing landscape.
Joanne put herself forward by submitting photographic and written evidence, supported by testimonies from students, statements from her managers, as well as a short video introducing herself.
After review, judges selected Joanne based on her ability to adapt, grow, and lead in an ever-evolving industry, while delivering exceptional standards at every level.

She will now go up against seven other contestants in her category and will find out how she got on during a glitzy awards ceremony that will be held on Monday 2 March 2026 at the Royal Lancaster London Hotel.
On her nomination, Joanne said: “I was absolutely delighted. For myself as a college educator, it is an honour to have the panel read about college education. I’m just flying the flag really for all of those college educators up and down the UK who are doing amazing things in the four walls of the classroom that no one ever gets to see.”
Joanne hopes her achievement will inspire her students to put themselves forward for recognition: “To enter a competition, you have to be determined, resilient, and really curious. I’m willing to enter the competitions myself as an educator, and I also encourage them to do the same.”
Mark Moloney, Managing Director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards, said: “The British Hairdressing Business Awards celebrate far more than success, they recognise the resilience, leadership and innovation that underpin a thriving industry. Our 2026 finalists demonstrate exceptional business insight and a genuine commitment to excellence, while playing a vital role in supporting local high streets, creating jobs and delivering outstanding client experiences. The quality of entries this year was truly impressive.”
