Kevin Green began his journey at West Suffolk College in 1997 as a caretaker in the Estates department and worked his way up to become Facilities Manager after completing a management course. Over more than two decades, Kevin played a key role in many of the College’s major building and refurbishment projects, including the construction of Gibraltar House, Minden House, and The Gateway. He retired in 2019 at the age of 60, proud to have witnessed and contributed to such a transformative period in the College’s history.
Where did your journey with West Suffolk College begin?
I started as one of the chuckle brothers in the estates department as a caretaker in August 1997 and somehow ended as facilities manager after completing the preparing for management course. I retired early after a fantastic time in 2019.
How did the college change over the years that you worked there?
I retired early at the age of 60, after experiencing a great deal of change at the college. I was involved in the construction and opening of Gibraltar House in 1999, the relocation of the Nursery to Whitworth House, and the building of Minden House. I also oversaw the major refurbishment of Suffolk House, which included the installation of a new lift, as well as the demolition of the old Gibraltar building on the car park opposite The Gateway. I worked on many internal projects too, such as the refurbishment of Australia House, the reconstruction of the Edmund Corridor and Theatre, and the initial setup of Anglian Lane for electrical, brickwork, and plumbing before their move to the current premises. My final major project was the construction of The Gateway.
What’s your favourite memory from your time at WSC?
The Christmas lunch was always a highlight for me, with fancy dress and a charity bucket for the staff association’s nominated charity.

What would your message be to the future staff of Eastern Education Group?
Enjoy what you do, and if you don’t, stop doing it! Time at college flashes by term after term, and before you know it, it’s gone.
They say time flies when you enjoy what you do, and the 23 years certainly did for me!
