Daniel Hammett – 100 Voices

Dan Hammett studied at West Suffolk College from 2013 to 2017, completing Sport and Exercise Science at Levels 2 and 3, while also re-sitting his GCSEs in English and Maths – which paved the way for him to attend his university of choice.

West Suffolk College offered Dan the perfect balance between academic opportunity and sporting ambition. It created an environment where he could develop his career in sport while playing football under the guidance of former professionals – all without compromising his education.

Thanks to the brilliant coaching team at the college, Dan says he learned just about everything he knows about football. That support helped him climb the ranks at Bury Town FC, where he was named Young Player of the Year – a proud moment that even landed him in the Bury Free Press!

What made you want to study at West Suffolk College?

I wanted to pursue my career in sports whilst also creating an environment where I could play football under former professional footballers without hindering my education.

How did the college help you get to where you are today?

I’ve recently left my job at the NHS to go travelling around Southeast Asia, my time at WSC is where I met 3 of my best friends that I am in daily contact with. They’ve been and continue to be a support system, we routinely reminisce on our time at college and how important the decision to do what interests us has when looking to meet likeminded people! The brilliant coaches at West Suffolk College taught me pretty much everything I know about football and allowed me to progress through the ranks at Bury Town FC. I ended up winning young player of the year and made the back pages of the Bury Free Press. This was a very surreal moment for me.

As we celebrate our 100-year history, do you have any advice for future students?

Take this part seriously, ask for help and enjoy your time spending time with friends in this environment, it doesn’t last forever!
