SUMMARY:Mods and Rockers and Moral Panics with Dr Jack Fawbert
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jack Fawbert explores how the clash between the Mods and Rockers transformed the way we understand crime\, deviance\, and society!Mods and Rockers and Moral Panics In the mid-1960s\, clashes between ‘mods’ and ‘rockers’ in British seaside towns shocked the nation – and transformed the way we understand crime\, deviance\, and society. In this thought-provoking lecture\, Dr Jack Fawbert explores how these events led to a seismic shift in sociology and criminology\, challenging dominant theories and introducing the now famous concept of moral panic. From media sensationalism to lasting academic impact\, this lecture traces how a youth subculture reshaped two disciplines and continues to influence how we interpret social behaviour today.   Bio  Dr Jack Fawbert was a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at four British universities over a period of 30 years. He has lectured on numerous sociological topics including moral panics\, and has been a guest on national television and radio programmes talking about his research

SUMMARY:How to get to people moving? with Dr Andrew Brinkley
DESCRIPTION:A brief overview on the approaches and latest research to changing people’s behaviour in a sedentary age.How to get people moving? With Dr Andrew Brinkley Amid growing concerns about national fitness and media panics over weight loss drugs\, this talk explores the latest research on changing public behaviour to improve health. From simple approaches to complex interventions\, discover how these findings are applied in Suffolk\, touching on sports psychology\, public policy\, and health. Dr Andrew Brinkley is a Lecturer in Exercise Psychology within the School of Sport\, Rehabilitation\, and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex\, a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol)\, and the Programme Lead for BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Psychology. Before his appointment\, he worked as a Research Associate at Loughborough University within the NCSEM and as a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Loughborough College. Using a mixed-methods approach and across the life course\, Andrew’s research addresses how complex and systems-based physical activity interventions and programmes can be developed\, implemented\, and evaluated. He has a particular interest in behavioural science and systems-thinking methods and evaluation. Examples of his work include workplace sports and exercise interventions designed to improve employee and organisational health\, programmes developed to improve educational and social outcomes in young people educated within pupil referral units\, nationwide Walking Netball programmes established to improve quality of life\, loneliness\, and mental health\, place-based public health programmes in Essex\, and whole-systems physical activity projects. Across a variety of settings\, Andrew is interested in how real-world physical activity interventions and programmes underpinned by behaviour-change theory and systems-thinking can be effectively evaluated and translated into practice and policy. He has published his work in leading journals and presented his research at conferences and to the population it seeks to serve through research consortiums and public engagement events.
