SUMMARY:Mods and Rockers and Moral Panics with Dr Jack Fawbert
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jack Fawbert explores how the clash between the Mods and Rockers transformed the way we understand crime\, deviance\, and society!Mods and Rockers and Moral Panics In the mid-1960s\, clashes between ‘mods’ and ‘rockers’ in British seaside towns shocked the nation – and transformed the way we understand crime\, deviance\, and society. In this thought-provoking lecture\, Dr Jack Fawbert explores how these events led to a seismic shift in sociology and criminology\, challenging dominant theories and introducing the now famous concept of moral panic. From media sensationalism to lasting academic impact\, this lecture traces how a youth subculture reshaped two disciplines and continues to influence how we interpret social behaviour today.   Bio  Dr Jack Fawbert was a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at four British universities over a period of 30 years. He has lectured on numerous sociological topics including moral panics\, and has been a guest on national television and radio programmes talking about his research

A group of gay and lesbian activists in London\, led by Mark Ashton\, recognise that miners and the LGBTQ+ community are both facing oppression. They form Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and begin fundraising for mining families despite resistance from both sides. \nTaking their support directly to the Welsh mining village of Onllwyn\, the activists gradually break down prejudice through solidarity\, generosity\, and shared struggle. As friendships grow\, both communities realise the power of unity in the face of discrimination. The story culminates in a moving display of mutual support during the following year’s Pride march\, showing how compassion and courage can bridge even the widest divides. \n \nLGBTQIA+ history in the UK \nLGBTQIA+ history in the UK reflects centuries of shifting laws\, attitudes\, and activism\, beginning with the Buggery Act of 1533\, which introduced the death penalty for same-sex acts under Henry VIII. Although the death penalty was removed in 1861\, same-sex acts still carried a minimum 10-year prison sentence\, and by 1885\, the Criminal Law Amendment Act made any homosexual act—public or private—prosecutable\, even affectionate letters between men. Attempts to legislate against lesbianism emerged in 1921\, but were rejected over fears that such laws would encourage women to explore homosexuality. A major turning point came with the 1957 Wolfenden Report\, which argued that homosexuality was not a disease and should not be criminalised\, paving the way for the Sexual Offences Act 1967\, which partially decriminalised consensual same-sex acts in private between men over 21 in England and Wales\, with Scotland and Northern Ireland following later. The UK’s LGBTQ+ rights movement gained momentum with the founding of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970 and the first UK Pride march in 1972\, which began a new era of visibility and activism. Major 21st-century milestones include the Civil Partnership Act 2004\, granting legal recognition to same-sex couples\, the Gender Recognition Act 2004\, enabling transgender people to be legally recognised in their gender\, the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2013\, and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ content in school curricula from 2019 onwards\, further strengthening equality and representation across the UK.LGBTQIA+ history in the UK reflects centuries of shifting laws\, attitudes\, and activism\, beginning with the Buggery Act of 1533\, which introduced the death penalty for same-sex acts under Henry VIII. By standing against discrimination and affirming equal rights\, we help reduce stigma and create environments where people feel valued and respected. This support has a profound impact on wellbeing\, as acceptance is closely linked to better mental health and a stronger sense of belonging. Inclusive communities are healthier and more resilient\, benefiting from the full contributions of all individuals. Ultimately\, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community reinforces compassion\, equality\, and unity—values that strengthen society as a whole. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet tickets

SUMMARY:How to get to people moving? with Dr Andrew Brinkley
DESCRIPTION:A brief overview on the approaches and latest research to changing people’s behaviour in a sedentary age.How to get people moving? With Dr Andrew Brinkley Amid growing concerns about national fitness and media panics over weight loss drugs\, this talk explores the latest research on changing public behaviour to improve health. From simple approaches to complex interventions\, discover how these findings are applied in Suffolk\, touching on sports psychology\, public policy\, and health. Dr Andrew Brinkley is a Lecturer in Exercise Psychology within the School of Sport\, Rehabilitation\, and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex\, a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol)\, and the Programme Lead for BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Psychology. Before his appointment\, he worked as a Research Associate at Loughborough University within the NCSEM and as a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Loughborough College. Using a mixed-methods approach and across the life course\, Andrew’s research addresses how complex and systems-based physical activity interventions and programmes can be developed\, implemented\, and evaluated. He has a particular interest in behavioural science and systems-thinking methods and evaluation. Examples of his work include workplace sports and exercise interventions designed to improve employee and organisational health\, programmes developed to improve educational and social outcomes in young people educated within pupil referral units\, nationwide Walking Netball programmes established to improve quality of life\, loneliness\, and mental health\, place-based public health programmes in Essex\, and whole-systems physical activity projects. Across a variety of settings\, Andrew is interested in how real-world physical activity interventions and programmes underpinned by behaviour-change theory and systems-thinking can be effectively evaluated and translated into practice and policy. He has published his work in leading journals and presented his research at conferences and to the population it seeks to serve through research consortiums and public engagement events.
