This lecture will take a closer look at the significant dietary changes from the beginning to the close of the Tudor dynasty\, involving governmental legislation\, religion\, health\, economy and fashion as it determined food availability\, preparation and popularity.  Bio  Brigitte Webster is author of Eating with the Tudors (2023)\, a detailed exploration of food and dining in Tudor England. Brigitte has appeared on Walking Tudor England with Prof. Suzannah Lipscomb\, contributes regularly to Tudor Places magazine\, and features on national and international history podcasts.

DESCRIPTION:Taff Gillingham looks at the history of the barracks and the buildings\, with stories about some of the men that served and trained thereEarning its Keep: 148 Years of the Suffolk Regiment Depot The Suffolk Regiment Depot was completed in June 1878 as part of the Cardwell Reforms of the Army. Renamed Gibraltar Barracks during the 1930s\, the site remained the home of The Suffolk Regiment and is now also home to West Suffolk College and Regimental Headquarters of The Royal Anglian Regiment. This talk looks at the history of the barracks and the buildings that originally covered the site\, along with stories about some of the men that served and trained there.  Bio Taff Gillingham is a military historical advisor for film\, television\, and theatre productions and\, in a thirty-year career\, has been involved in many major productions. He also co-owns Khaki Devil Limited; a company supplying historically accurate uniforms\, equipment\, weapons\, and props for productions.

In this engaging lecture\, lifelong motor racing fan Martin Collen explores the colourful characters\, controversies\, and political manoeuvres that have defined Grand Prix racing since its dramatic beginnings in 1906. Whether you’re a motorsport enthusiast or curious about the billion-dollar world behind the track\, this talk promises insight\, intrigue\, and high-octane history.   Bio Martin Collen is an experienced Lecturer in Engineering\, currently working at the University and Professional Development Centre with many years of industrial experience as a 3D Technical Designer. He first attended a Grand Prix in 1996 and has seen a total of 22 F1 races; his love of the sport has developed primarily because of an interest in the related engineering concepts.

Our event is completely Free\, the theme of the night is allyship\, which will be encouraged and promoted throughout the night. We will be supported by external partners including BSE Pride\, Outreach Youth and West Suffolk Hospital. \nThe event will take the following format: \n\nDoors open from 6pm / Information stalls available\nWelcome & introduction\nMini-film + speaker introduction\nMain Film (Pride)\nQ&A panel and audience discussion\n\nEvent Timings: Doors will open from 6pm\, information stalls will be available. Film to begin at 7pm (promptly). Event to close at 11pm. The bar will be open and canapes will be provided. \nFor more detailed information on how to get to the Edmunds Restaurant\, please see the map in the photo section. \n \nSynopsis of Pride (2014) \nPride is a historical comedy-drama based on the true story of an unlikely alliance formed during the 1984 British miners’ strike. A group of gay and lesbian activists in London\, led by Mark Ashton\, recognise that miners and the LGBTQ+ community are both facing oppression. They form Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and begin fundraising for mining families despite resistance from both sides. \nTaking their support directly to the Welsh mining village of Onllwyn\, the activists gradually break down prejudice through solidarity\, generosity\, and shared struggle. As friendships grow\, both communities realise the power of unity in the face of discrimination. The story culminates in a moving display of mutual support during the following year’s Pride march\, showing how compassion and courage can bridge even the widest divides. \n \nLGBTQIA+ history in the UK \nLGBTQIA+ history in the UK reflects centuries of shifting laws\, attitudes\, and activism\, beginning with the Buggery Act of 1533\, which introduced the death penalty for same-sex acts under Henry VIII. Although the death penalty was removed in 1861\, same-sex acts still carried a minimum 10-year prison sentence\, and by 1885\, the Criminal Law Amendment Act made any homosexual act—public or private—prosecutable\, even affectionate letters between men. Attempts to legislate against lesbianism emerged in 1921\, but were rejected over fears that such laws would encourage women to explore homosexuality. A major turning point came with the 1957 Wolfenden Report\, which argued that homosexuality was not a disease and should not be criminalised\, paving the way for the Sexual Offences Act 1967\, which partially decriminalised consensual same-sex acts in private between men over 21 in England and Wales\, with Scotland and Northern Ireland following later. The UK’s LGBTQ+ rights movement gained momentum with the founding of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970 and the first UK Pride march in 1972\, which began a new era of visibility and activism. The talk will explain on the rise and eventual fall of medieval armour across Europe\, the changing styles and design. It will also provide an opportunity to see and handle handcrafted replica items from this period.  Bio Ian Pycroft is a lifelong history enthusiast\, starting in 1985 as a performer in historical theatre and re-enactment. Later going onto to establish Black Knight Historical in 2003. His work over the last 30 years has involved him working in public events for heritage sites and museums\, and in the world of film and TV – much more will be divulged on the night itself.

In this powerful anniversary lecture\, Derek Wilson tells the remarkable story of the young American crew\, their time at Rougham\, and the dramatic events of that day. \nBio \nDerek Wilson is a lecturer at the West Suffolk College. He has extensive industry experience in engineering and is also activley involved with the Mission Mistress Memorial Group.

However\, they can also be seen as representing an integration and application of an exhilarating plethora of ideas with roots in many other fields. One such area\, which has not been sufficiently appreciated\, is the potential links between monastic and therapeutic communities. In this talk\, Dan will trace some of these interrelations\, with mutual benefits in both directions.  Bio   Dr Dan Neale\, a Counselling Lecturer at the University and Professional Development Centre is a Group Analyst who spent many years working in Therapeutic Communities. He is especially interested in applications of group analysis and TCs to other fields\, and vice versa.
