SUMMARY:A World Unmade: Literature and the Crisis of Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Julia Firmin as they explore whether meaning can be rebuilt after crisis\, and if a world marked by rupture feels familiar today. \n\n\n\nA World Unmade: Literature and the Crisis of Meaning \n\n\n\nThis lecture explores literature shaped by disillusionment\, disorientation and dread\, asking whether a world marked by rupture and uncertainty feels familiar today. Focusing on the Lost Generation’s response to the aftermath of the First World War\, it makes timely connections with the anxieties of our own historical moment. Through literature\, the talk considers whether meaning can be rebuilt after crisis and whether a happy ending is ever truly possible. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nDr. Julia Firmin previously taught American Literature at the University of Essex\, and English for Academic Purposes at Lancaster University summer schools. She is now the course lead for the English and History degree programme here at the University and Professional Development Centre\, alongside her role as our Academic Resources Advisor. \n\n\n\nHighlights \n\n\n\n\n1 hour 15 minutes\n\n\n\nall ages\n\n\n\nIn person\n\n\n\nFree parking

SUMMARY:Medieval Auditors and the Fight Against Corruption
DESCRIPTION:Overview \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Jerome Gasson as they uncover the hidden world of dishonest farm managers and the specialist auditors trained to expose them. \n\n\n\nMedieval Auditors and the Fight Against Corruption \n\n\n\nThink you would be clever enough to cheat the system in fourteenth-century England? This lecture uncovers the hidden world of dishonest medieval farm managers and the specialist auditors trained to expose them. Through detailed accounts and unexpected discoveries\, Jerome Gasson reveals how these officials worked\, why corruption was so difficult to detect\, and why the auditors did not always have the last laugh. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJerome Gasson wrote their PhD on the Clare estate in the fourteenth century\, supervised by Chris Briggs. They passed in 2025 with no corrections. And currently they are training to be a history teacher in Cambridge. \n\n\n\nHighlights \n\n\n\n\n1 hour 15 minutes\n\n\n\nall ages\n\n\n\nIn person\n\n\n\nFree parking
